Although Botswana hasn't reported any case of the coronavirus yet, the country already imposed heavy measures on March 18, which lead to the travel ban for everyone coming from coronavirus-affected countries.
Later, on the 24th of March, Vice President Slumber Tsogwane announced the closing of the border with all its neighboring countries. Traveling to surrounding countries Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, is only allowed for the movement of goods and services.
Visas that had been issued before have been canceled too and it is not possible anymore to receive a visa on arrival for Botswana. These measures will be put into place until further notice.
Botswana also banned all events that attract more than 100 people. All essential businesses, like banks and stores, are only allowed a maximum of 50 people.
In addition, the government announced a ban on alcohol as of March 28.
As earlier suggested by the president, a state of emergency will be declared on April 2. President Masisi said he will impose this new measure as cases have risen in neighboring countries. Many Botswanans from corona-affected countries returned and this increases the risk of a mass outbreak in the African country.
Under these new measures, people are only allowed to leave their homes for necessary reasons, like doing groceries and the transporting of essential goods.
The state of emergency will last for three weeks. Additionally, social-distancing guidelines are being set up from April 2 until April 30.
